"Songs like these Are not so easy
to sing, Once they're started,
They dare not stop, From
the highlands To the city alleys
below They keep taking me
To lift them back to the top. It starts out like a purring
From your caress to a healing, And I dare not
say more Lest it break the spell
Of my heart's stealing"
(lyric from "The
Uncommon Kind", HOMELAND CD) | |
The Purity Of Live PerformanceBefore mechanical recordings, music was only heard when in the company of a
living musician. The mystic ritual, ceremony, the marriage of sound, word and light ~ These are the elements of a living musical presence. The immediate experience of instantaneous music in the
performance environment vastly differs from a groomed, enhanced
recording with overdubs, heard from speakers or ear-pieces. To capture an
event, in front of an audience, in real time is to listen to a
"high-wire act for the ears" ~ This is the tradition that Laurianne
Fiorentino's musical CDs hail from. The pure expression and emotion
witnessed by those in the concert hall or mission church, then recorded
and released, embodies the essence of her first 5 recordings. Each CD featuring songs and improvisations, and each CD featuring impromptu instrumental collaborations can be experienced as meditation music. A Santa Fe, NM based musician and educator, Laurianne Fiorentino repeatedly redefines how to write a song as often as she breaks the mold of how to present performances which enthrall and captivate an audience ~ to conjur and travel in the tradition of mystical shamanism. Each composition can be heard as an aural mandala, a mantra, which carries the vibration of creation inside sound. A consciousness that dreams to be known and understood as acoustic music.
Next? Pop Meets Profound
A studio project with a full band (acoustic bass, drums, guitar, trombone, and vocals - featuring Dave Borton, Wes brown, Joe Boyle, Lincoln Hubley, Celia Faran and more) is in the works to be released in 2011. "That was Wonderful! You got them to think! You got them to laugh! You got them to sing! Oh, how fabulous!"

2011 REVIEW OF LIVE PERFORMANCE AT REAL FOOD NATION
"BTW, I went to Real Food Nation about a month ago and ate in
their new posh Dinner Club and really liked it. Last Thursday, we went
again, expecting to eat at the Dinner Club. Before going in, we decided to
check out the original Real Food Nation restaurant next door, having only been
there once when it first opened.
As soon as we walked in, we realized how much the place had
changed. It was really nice! We heard this fabulous music emanating from an
excellent sound system. After looking around, we were about to leave when I
chose to look around the corner where there were more tables and people eating.
It was then that I located the source of the music; it was
live, and it was coming from Laurianne Fiorentino and David Borton, whose
picture just appeared on the cover of SF One Heart December issue. There's a
big write-up inside too about these two minstrels.
“Wow” - that's what we heard each other say as my friend and
I canceled our reservations at the Supper Club then quickly located a
comfortable seat as close to the music as possible. We stayed and ate there,
swaying to Laurianne and David (she: singing, guitar and infrequent harmonica;
he: trombone) until they would play no more.
After one tune
that really sounded like Jobim (One Note Samba, Girl From Ipanema, Dindi,
Desifinado, Wave, etc.) I asked her to play another Jobim, and she said
"What do you mean Jobim? I wrote that." I was shocked because I know
Jobim, and nobody ever came close -
until now.
These two really have it together; she with her original
music and words, he with his very subtle and eloquent horn counterpoint.
Laurianne is a gifted musician and poet and David is her able musical
companion. Also, there seemed to be more instruments heard than seen, like in a
movie when the music swells and you hear instruments that aren't there." MT
2010 VIDEO DEMO WITH ODETTA
Laurianne Fiorentino's recordings are live concerts; either solo, duo, or with a small trio.
Her concerts were performed and recorded in the historic Santuario de Guadalupe Mission in Santa Fe, the oldest shrine to The Dark Goddess in the USA.
Scattered amongst these tracks, are aural explorations recorded at The Forest House Studio, and collaborations with guest musicians and natural sonic elements.
Purely instrumental CDs Windhorse Rising & Viriditas (bamboo flute, cello, piano) and invented vocal recordings are live and improvised.
Visit this site often for new music, videos, recordings, and postings of Laurianne Fiorentino's original paintings and photographs.

"Every
once in a while, one comes across a 'different' artist, and I wanted
to start your day by recommending you discover Laurianne Fiorentino. She's from
New Mexico… a tough, committed singer-songwriter with some particularly powerful
material; she's not an angry feminist (a la Ani di Franco, for instance), but
she's positive and strong, and well worth bringing to the attention of festival
bookers. As those of you who know me well ought to know by now, I don't hype
people needlessly - especially when they don't pay me to do so!
